Historic rains have battered the southwest of the country since Thursday, July 5th, causing a series of floods and landslides affecting Hiroshima and Okayama prefectures in particular. These areas saw up to 23 inches of rain between Friday, July 6th and Saturday, July 7th. So far, more than 1.6 million people have evacuated and another three million were advised to leave over the weekend. At least 50 people are dead and almost 50 others are missing.
The family and friends of Shin Koyamada, a member of the Sister Cities International Board of Directors, were personally affected by this catastrophic and historic natural disaster. Shin is founder of KIF, an actor from The Last Samurai and Disney’s Wendy Wu Homecoming Warrior, is originally from the Okayama Prefecture where he’s serving as a Goodwill Ambassador.

Koyamada International Foundation, of which Shin Koyamada is a founder, is raising relief funds to help the victims of this historic and catastrophic flooding event. The victims lost their homes and belongings overnight, escaped through their windows and rooftops to save their own lives, and are waiting to be rescued. The funds raised go to the victims in Okayama Prefecture and the City of Kurashiki that were most affected by this event.
